Taking place this year during the Japan World Expo, EMVCo’s annual EMV® User Meeting is opening its doors on 10th and 11th June in Osaka, Japan. Wondering if you should join us? In this post, Oliver Manahan, EMVCo Director of Engagement and Operations, gives us an insight into the topics that Associates and Subscribers can expect to discuss.
EMVCo’s annual EMV User Meeting is an opportunity for EMV industry stakeholders to network with peers, and hear first-hand how EMV technologies are evolving to support new and emerging payment trends, marketplace requirements and changing consumer behaviours.
With the 2025 EMV User Meeting now just weeks away, we actively encourage EMVCo Associates and Subscribers to get their travel booked and join us in Osaka to learn about the trends and technologies shaping the future of our ecosystem.
So, why join us? In addition to the usual updates from across the technical body, and the unique opportunity to catch-up with EMV peers and make new connections, attendees will learn more about EMVCo’s work in the following areas:
NOT TO BE MISSED: The latest update on EMVCo’s Electric Vehicle Open Payments (EVOP) initiative
For more than 18 months, EMVCo has been investigating how an open payments approach could help to make the electric vehicle (EV) charging payment experience as convenient as paying for fuel and remove friction.
Through extensive collaboration and engagement with EV ecosystem stakeholders, work has progressed on the development of a new EMV EVOP Specification that enables an open payment ‘plug and charge’ experience.
Following on from the EMVCo Technical Meeting in Bangkok, the release of the draft documentation is expected shortly. We look forward to sharing more on this in Osaka.
Addressing new trends in payment initiation and authentication
EMVCo is also exploring how the EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) ecosystem can use passkeys to promote simpler and more secure checkout experiences.
With consumer awareness and adoption increasing, attendees can find out about the key technical and user experience requirements that must be considered as mainstream adoption of passkeys grows.
The meeting will also update on how EMVCo is working to support the regulatory and technical developments shaping payment initiation and authentication. This includes how EMV 3-D Secure (EMV 3DS) can work with the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet framework to ensure Payment Service Directive (PSD2 and PSD3) Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements are supported.
As part of this, attendees can learn about a new white paper that will soon be launched to further support industry understanding.
Supporting in-store payment acceptance innovation
In addition to online transactions, we cannot forget that in-store payments are also being shaped by new market requirements, trends and innovations. It is crucial that we discuss how EMV Chip Specifications are evolving to meet a changing payment acceptance landscape.
EMVCo has engaged extensively with the industry to explore the development of performance and security requirements for ‘Biometric on Card’. In Osaka, we will share an update on the performance requirements and supporting approval and evaluation frameworks that are being worked on.
Attendees can also hear about EMVCo’s work to promote a more seamless experience for TapToMobile payments. With new payment technologies demanding new testing processes and capabilities, we will update on the development of a roadmap for adapting the reduced range acceptance criteria, to bring the experience delivered by TapToMobile devices closer to that of traditional payment terminals.
The contributions of EMVCo participants and industry partners – past and present – has played an integral role in shaping the development of EMV Specifications.
I look forward to welcoming EMVCo Associates, Subscribers and our industry partners in Osaka to discuss the ongoing evolution and enhancement of EMV technologies. By working together, the payments community can continue to ensure the development and adoption of solutions that support trusted and convenient payments for merchants and consumers around the world. Join us.
