EMVCo looks forward to welcoming the EMV® community at its annual gathering on 27 and 28 June in San Diego, USA. With representation from across the payment ecosystem, EMVCo will share high-level insights into EMVCo’s work and priorities in 2023. Oliver Manahan, EMVCo Director of Engagement and Operations, provides us with some key perspectives on what to expect from this year’s event.
Why is the EMV User Meeting a key date in the payment community’s diary?
Whatever you are buying, wherever you are in the world, you expect your payment card to work, and merchants globally seek to meet such expectations in serving their customers. For in-store, e-commerce or remote transactions, the process needs to be familiar, convenient and reliable. EMV Technology helps make this possible, thanks to its broad community of merchants, issuers, acquirers, payment networks, financial institutions, manufacturers, technology providers and testing laboratories supporting and implementing EMV Specifications.
On Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 June, EMVCo subject matter experts and representatives gather with EMV payment stakeholders from across the ecosystem to inform and advance EMVCo’s work in line with industry requirements.
Who do you expect to attend and why?
The EMV User Meeting is open to all EMVCo Associates and Subscribers. Although the meeting rotates between the Americas, Asia and Europe, the attendance is global, reflecting the international nature of payments.
While there are many platforms for EMVCo Associates to connect in-person throughout the year, and subject matter groups to address specific topics, this is the only gathering during the year that brings the broader EMV community together. Attendees can connect and network with EMVCo representatives and subject matter experts, alongside industry peers who they otherwise wouldn’t engage with on a regular basis. The result is uniquely interesting and meaningful dialogue.
What are the hot topics for 2023?
In addition to an overall update from the EMVCo Board Chair and EMVCo’s Directors, and information on EMVCo’s ongoing work, a few key areas stand out on this year’s agenda.
1. Terminal Testing
Delivery of third-party services that verify that products and solutions meet the technical baseline to work seamlessly and securely together is key to building merchant and consumer confidence. Advances and changes in testing requirements, therefore, result in dedicated agenda time due to their importance. We expect an update on the EMV Contactless Kernel Specification testing programme. We also look forward to discussions on testing changes being considered to support using a consumer mobile device as a payment acceptance terminal, known as TapToMobile.
2. Click to Pay
EMVCo has been advancing new EMV Secure Remote Commerce (EMV SRC) UI/UX Guidelines to demonstrate an enhanced EMV SRC user experience. This has been developed in a dynamic, interactive format, and this new tool will be previewed.
3. A Perspective from the U.S.
While all our discussions take an international approach, we do look forward to hearing from our guest speaker Jason Bohrer who leads the Secure Technology Alliance and U.S. Payments Forum.
