Message from the Chair of the EMVCo Board of Managers
EMVCo is committed to advancing the EMV® Specifications to reflect the transformative technological shifts now accelerating change across the payments industry.
In recognition of the distinct considerations presented by growing momentum for agentic commerce, we have been working on how global specifications can support innovation in agentic payment solutions by increasing interoperability across the ecosystem. An Agentic Payments Task Force has now been established to define and develop EMVCo’s approach, examining scenarios in which consumers authorise artificial intelligence (AI) agents to use card payments for purchases on their behalf.
In response to the increasing proliferation of verifiable digital credentials (VDCs) across digital identity ecosystems, EMVCo is leveraging its proven experience in promoting global interoperability to define a Digital Payment Credential (DPC) that represents a payment-specific application of VDCs. This work is initially focused on defining the data that a credential contains and how it is structured – known as a ‘schema’ – to support secure, privacy-preserving and scalable authentication for card-based payments.
EMVCo has also published Version 1.0 of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Open Payments Use Case document. The document explains how EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) technology can be used to integrate card-based payments at EV charging stations supporting ISO 15118 Plug and Charge – helping enable a trusted, consistent and convenient EV charging payment experience for drivers across the world.
To support other emerging SRC use cases, EMVCo is exploring opportunities to evolve the EMV SRC Specifications, including use cases beyond e-commerce, to simplify their use and aid industry understanding to promote innovation. Work also continues to enhance the EMV 3-D Secure (3DS) Specifications, moving towards a specification structure and delivery process that helps to simplify solution development and deployment, while optimising testing. This reflects a wider ambition to make all EMV Specifications and related documentation more flexible, quicker to update, and easier to use.
All these initiatives require extensive industry engagement and collaboration. Our first Board of Advisors Meeting of the year provided an opportunity to explore key industry developments, and we look forward to continuing these conversations – and more – at our upcoming Technical Meeting in Singapore from 14-16 April. Registration for this event is still open, with an additional option for Associates to attend sessions virtually.
This will be followed by our annual EMV User Meeting, which takes place from 9-10 June in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. If you are planning on attending to explore the trends and technologies shaping card payments with industry peers, you can benefit from early bird pricing until 15 April.
The below summarises key EMVCo news, technical updates and activities from the first quarter of 2026, outlining the latest educational resources available to support understanding of EMVCo’s work. We encourage you to share this newsletter with your colleagues and industry peers.
