Kernel ID

The Kernel ID is defined in the Entry Point specification to ensure a one-to-one matching between the card application and the contactless kernel in the reader, and is divided into international and domestic.

The Approval Process

1 of 4 Step 1 Registration

Download the Agreement and Registration form. Complete both documents and submit them to EMVCo via the email address specified in the Registration Form.

2 of 4 Step 2 EMVCo Review

EMVCo will review the forms to ensure that the applicant meets necessary criteria to obtain a Kernel ID.  This evaluation may take some time and may involve follow-up questions from EMVCo.

3 of 4 Step 3 Invoice & Payment

Upon approval of the application, EMVCo will email the applicant an invoice. Payment must be received in full prior to issuance of the Kernel ID.

4 of 4 Step 4 Kernel ID Issuance

Upon receipt of payment, EMVCo will approve the application and then issue and publish the ID.

Prerequisites

The request for obtaining an international Kernel ID allocated by EMVCo shall meet all the following criteria:

The applicant shall be an institution or organization with an active involvement in contactless payments having an international reach.

The applicant shall provide the target RID (or RIDs) attributed by ISO (ISO/IEC 78165) and shall have a contactless kernel and the supporting type approval scheme.

The contactless kernel to be assigned with the Kernel ID shall be active or scheduled for deployment within one year of the request.

Fee Structure

The registration fee charged by EMVCo is intended to cover the administrative expense incurred by EMVCo in managing the Kernel ID registration process. This process includes, but is not limited to:

Review of registration and applicant criteria
Updates to the Kernel ID registration process
Maintenance of Kernel ID database
Publication of the current Kernel ID database

The following registration fee shall be paid to EMVCo by the Kernel ID applicant:

$10,000 (Ten Thousand USD) for reviewing the application and issuing the Kernel ID.

An annual renewal fee will apply for each issued Kernel ID:

$2,500 (Twenty-Five Hundred USD) for renewal per annum; effective one year from the registration date.
